“Hey, bitches!” said Jewel as she slammed the door to her car. She reached for a bag in the backseat of her convertible with one hand while simultaneously holding a Starbucks drink, her cellphone, and her glasses in the other. “Ya’ll ready to have some fun!? I can’t tell you how much I’ve been looking forward to this weekend”, she said with a fading smile. “Ugh! Work has been kicking my butt left and right. I tell you, as soon as a find something even remotely better I’m outta there!”
“Damn! Well you’re here now. So you don’t have to worry about that for a little while at least”, said Eric. “You need any help?”
“I got it”, Sarah said, rushing in between them. “We just got here ourselves and I’m the one with the keypad code. You know what that means?”
Jewel stared blankly.
“It meeeeans we get first pick of rooms! Come on!”, exclaimed Sarah.
Sarah didn’t really care about what room she got. If anything she would have preferred the one out of everyone’s way. What she really wanted to do was get inside for some reason. She couldn’t explain why, but she had an overwhelming feeling to open the door to the cabin. Ever since she and Eric arrived there was this pressure coming from the cabin. It was hard to describe, but Sarah thought it felt a lot like a looming threat. The only other time she felt this feeling was with her mother on those late nights. It was so long ago, but Sarah would still sometimes dream of those nights. Her mother, a large shadowy figure standing at the doorway… just waiting.
And so, Sarah couldn’t wait any longer. She felt suffocated. She tore Jewel’s bag from her hand, sped to the door, and typed the code.
7651 – Erh!
7652 – Erh!
“Fuck!” Sarah quietly exhaled.
7653 – Beep!
The door opened and everyone, as if summoned, turned to look inside.
